most badass disney villain ever?

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

Think about it:
* Not motivated by inadequacy or jealousy or fear.... Sleeping Beauty doesn't have anything that she wants per se; she's just motivated by plain old hatred.
* How to stop Prince Charming from getting to the castle? A forest of thorns, that's how.
* She turns herself into a motherf-ing dragon.... because she can.

Trust me, I honestly don't sit around everyday thinking of these things.... somehow they just happen to come up.

You are correct. The image of her green eyes flicking open in the dark recesses of Aurora's fireplace was seared into my brain as a child. I recently Netflix'd the movie and re-watched it. Not as epic as I remember it, but the whole spinning wheel sequence still roiled up some serious dread in my now adult bones.

"Now, you shall deal with me, O prince, and all the powers of HHHHHELLLLL."

Can you imagine Disney creating a villain like that now? Even Ursula (the last Disney bitch to come close to scary) was too humorous to be terrifying.

JJ: Extras points for Maleficent's ultimate evilness because she conjures the powers of hell. I remember being terrified/intrigued as a child, hell being mentioned and all that in a Disney cartoon. I gotta see this movie again. Ursula from The Little Mermaid was pretty badass, but I agree with you that she wasn't exactly scary. I must admit though, that scene where she's in human form and singing to the mirror about her evil plans ("and the o-cean will be mine!") is one of my favorite moments of all Disney cartoons.

TaylorL: Not that familiar with the Kingdom Hearts bandwagon, but I like that they're smart enough to go all the way and make Maleficent a total badass. As for Gaston.... I guess Beauty and the Beast wasn't nominated for a Best Picture oscar for nothing.

Oh yeah.... does anybody remember the "Muppet Babies" episode where Animal played Maleficent? Instead of a forest of thorns, it was petunias.
